Zoë Nwarache is a first-year student from the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior here at Notre Dame. Intrigued by both American history and Africana studies, when given the freedom to choose any research topic in the realm of science for a Writing and Rhetoric class, she used the opportunity to deep dive into an area that she already found interest in—the mark slavery has left in modern America. More specifically, in A Lingering History—Amateur Hour Podcast, Zoë and her guest speaker discuss how the early mistreatments of black people by the medical field has not only led to advancements in the specialty, but also how it has contributed to racism within medical practices, thus making it the genesis of the prevalence of mistrust in the medical field observed in black communities today.
Following Notre Dame, Zoë plans to continue her academic journey with the hopes of ultimately working as a research psychologist specializing in the development of more effective treatments for individuals with depression and anxiety. She would like to send thanks to Professor Michelle Marvin for her encouraging insight during the composition of this podcast.
